Windows 7 provides several options for conserving power when you are not using your PC. These options include Sleep, Hibernate, and Hybrid Sleep and are very useful if you are using a laptop. Here’s the difference between them. See where are the option

Note: this article is meant primarily for beginners. Obviously ubergeeky readers will already know the difference between power modes.

Sleep Mode

Sleep mode is a power-saving state that is similar to pausing a DVD movie. All actions on the computer are stopped and any open documents and applications are put in memory. You can quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds. Sleep mode is basically the same thing as “Standby” mode.

The Sleep mode is useful if you want to stop working for a short period of time. The computer doesn’t use much power in Sleep mode.

Hibernate 

The Hibernate mode saves your open documents and running applications to your hard disk and shuts down the computer, which means once your computer is in Hibernate mode, it uses zero power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you left off.

Use this mode if you won’t be using the laptop for an extended period of time, and you don’t want to close your documents.

Hybrid Sleep

The Hybrid Sleep mode is a combination of the Sleep and Hibernate modes meant for desktop computers. It puts any open documents and applications both in memory and on your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power state, allowing you to quickly wake the computer and resume your work. The Hybrid Sleep mode is enabled by default in Windows on desktop computers and disabled on laptops. When enabled, it automatically puts your computer into Hybrid Sleep mode when you put it into Sleep mode.

Hybrid Sleep mode is useful for desktop computers in case of a power outage. When power resumes, Windows can restore your work from the hard disk, if the memory is not accessible.

If you don’t see the Sleep option or the Hibernate option, it may be for one of the following reasons:

• Your video card may not support the Sleep mode. Refer to the documentation for your video card. You can also update the driver.
• If you don’t have administrative access on the computer, you may have to refer to the administrator to change the option.
• The power-saving modes in Windows are turned on and off in your computer’s BIOS (basic input/output system). To turn on these modes, restart your computer and then enter the BIOS setup program. The key for accessing BIOS differs for each computer manufacturer. Instructions for accessing BIOS generally displays on the screen as the computer boots. For more information, see your computer’s documentation or check the website for your computer’s manufacturer.
• If you don’t see the Hibernate option, the Hybrid Sleep option is mostly likely enabled. We will explain how to enable and disable the Hybrid Sleep mode later in this article.

1. Install a Firewall A firewall helps protect your PC by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network. It acts as a barrier that checks any information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks the information or allows it to pass through to your computer.


2. Change the Administrative Password on your Wireless Routers Each manufacturerships their wireless routers with a default password for easy initial access. These passwords are easy to find on vendor support sites, and should therefore be changed immediately.
3. Change the Default SSID Name and Turn Off SSID Broadcasting This will require your wireless client computers to manually enter the name of your SSID (Service Set Identifier) before they can connect to your network, greatly minimizing the damage from the casual user whose laptop is configured to connect to any available SSID broadcast it finds. You should also change the SSID name from the factory default, since these are just as well-known as the default passwords. NOTE: Even though the SSID is disabled the SSID is included in the data packets that are transmitted and is easy to discover.


4. Disable DHCP For a SOHO network with only a few computers, consider disabling DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on your router and assigning IP addresses to your client computers manually. On newer wireless routers, you can even restrict access to the router to specific MAC addresses.

5. Replace WEP with WPA WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is a security protocol that was designed to provide a wireless computer network with a level of security and privacy comparable to what is usually expected of a wired computer network. WEP seeks to establish security by encrypting data transmitted over the wireless computer network. Data encryption protects the vulnerable wireless link between clients and access points. Once this measure has been taken, other typical wire computer network securitymechanisms such as password protection, end-to-end encryption, virtual private networks (VPN’s), and authentication can be put in place to ensure privacy. Unfortunately, WEP is a very weak form of security that uses common 60 or 108 bit key shared among all of the devices on the network to encrypt the wireless data.Hackers can access tools freely available on the Internet that can crack a WEP key in as little as 15 minutes.

Utorrent is pretty much the number 1 bittorrent client (feel free to argue below), being standalone and under 300KB, yet sophisticated and…well in other words, if all software were like uTorrent the world would be a much happier place, unfortunately we have to make way for, you know, stuff like Microsoft products though.

Getting to the point, I have long used uTorrent foreducational research and by trial and error I’ve found a few tweaks made to your settings to noticeably increase your download speed. By default, uTorrent and othertorrent clients alike may appear to have very slow download rates so the wandering p2p user that swears by Limewire would be disappointed when takinguTorrent on a test drive.

Making the following changes though can considerably increase your download speed.

• Limit the upload speed

While your internet connection may have different download and upload rates and appear to be of two different channels or streams, the upload rate affects the download rate dramatically, try uploading a file with the maximum upload rate of your connection and watch your download speed or surfing slow down to a crawl, in other words, like a dial up connection, this is because, the upload rate does in fact affect download speed (i had to state that again for slow people reading it).

Thus reducing your upload speed to half of your connection’s potential can give you a boost in download speed right away. So if you have a 128kbps upload connection for example, limiting upload to 6KB would make downloads faster. You can adjust the upload speed by right clicking the uTorrent tray icon, navigation to upload limit and adjusting it there.

• Seed

While this might be a contradiction of the first point, having a good share ratio promotes you from no good freeloader to ermm..someone who seeds in the bittorrent network which would give you better download rates, you can check your share ratio by visiting Help > show statistics. Maintaining a share ratio above 1 would be perfect.

• Port Forward/Un-firewall/Enable UPnP

Port forwarding ensures that uTorrent always has a direct connection to the network, the icon on the statusbar displays your connection status, if you see a red or yellow exclamation mark, your download speeds are probably not at their fullest as uTorrent does not have complete connectivity, this could also be because your connection sucks but let’s assume it’s not that. First of all make sure your firewall program allows uTorrentto connect to the network, if you use the windows firewall, checking ‘add uTorrent to exceptions’ in theuTorrent preferences should do it, if you use any other software, check the user manual. Once that is done, if you connect via a modem that should be about it, if you connect via a router, you will need to check the firewall on the router (some routers have them) and make sure that allows uTorrent connectivity too. Next, check if it supports UPnP, if it does, make sure it is enabled in the uTorrent settings too, if you have done all these steps you should be having complete connectivity IF your router supports UPnP. If it does not support UPnP and you connect via a static IP (if you have no clue call up your ISP) visit portforward.com and forward a port for uTorrent and you should be set from there. If you do not have a static IP though you are probably screwed and will have to stick with the crappy download speeds. If you follow the steps above based on how you connect to the Internet, you should see a green tick in the status bar which means you have complete connectivity.

• Adjust number of connections

Leaving the number of connections to be active in utorrent as the default may not be the optimum choice as far as speed goes. After personally trying different number of connections as well as the response of other users, I have found making the following adjustments to be beneficial. Navigate to Options > Preferences > Bandwidth, set global maximum number of connections to 100 and maximum number of connected peers per torrent to 40.

The above tips to speed up uTorrent is not a given, but i am confident it should help most users to some extent, as always, anything of note in the comments would be appreciated.

1. Using IP Instead Of URL

   This depends on the software/application used. Sometimes blocked sites are stored as a list of URLs (eg. www.yahoo.com, www.donwload.com,etc) and typing the IP instead of the URL might sometimes work. In a local computer, doing a ping domain.com command in Command Prompt (Mac users use Terminal) will return you the IP address. You can also do it online via www.whatsmyip.org

2. Redirection With Short URL Service

   Sometimes the URL you intend to browse might be ban, but converting them to another a shorter URL with short URL services might just help you to bypass the settings.

3. Google Cache

   Search engines like Google and Yahoo cache webpages and these cached pages are stored in search engines themselves, which likely will be added to the blocked list. Click on the ‘cache’ will bring you to a cache version of the page, as updated as how Google caches it.
   

4. Internet Archive – Wayback Machine

   Wayback Machine is a internet service that periodically keeps a copy of almost all websites in the Internet way from the date they’re started. Clicking on the latest copy of what Wayback Machine have should be somewhat similar to the real site. Another way to access blocked sites via caches.
   

5. Anonymous Surfing

   Some site allows you to take advantage of their proxy or domain to surf other sites as anonymous. Here’s 90+ proxy websites we’ve previously mentioned.

6. Use Proxy In Browsers

   There are tons of sites out there that distributes free proxies of almost any country. Here’s an example. Check out the following methods on how/where to insert proxies in your web browsers.
   Proxy Surfing – Firefox
   
   Under Advanced tab, select Network tab, then click inside Connection Settings. Select Manual proxy configuration, put proxy under HTTP proxy.
   Proxy Surfing – Internet Explorer
   
   Go to Tools -> Internet Options. Select Connections tab. Click into LAN Settings, check Proxy Server. Insert your proxy URL inside Address.

7. Bypass With Translations Services

   Online translation services like AltaVista BabelFish, Google Translate allows you to translate a website from one language to another and display the translated results on their own page.The trick here is to enter the URL (website you’re blocked), retranslate it even if you don’t need to and let Google or AltaVista fetch you the content.

8. Subscribe To RSS Feed

This might not work for all sites, but if the site you intended to visit provides RSS feeds, you can subscribe and read it with a RSS reader, or have it regularly send the contents to your email

9. Retrieve Web Pages Via Email

Web2Mail is a free service that sends websites you want to read right into your inbox. All you need to do is send an email to www@web2mail.com with the URL as subject title.
